Appropriate Body Services for ECTs

All schools that offer a statutory induction are required to have an Appropriate Body (AB) for their Early Career Teachers (ECTs).

ABs play a key role in statutory teacher induction. In addition to monitoring ECTs, Appropriate Bodies will support schools and ECTs to meet the statutory guidance. Through moderation and quality assurance, we will work collaboratively with schools to ensure that ECTs are fairly and consistently assessed.

Appropriate Body Reforms September 2024

On 15 November 2022, the Department for Education published a response to the consultation on appropriate body reform and induction assessment, held from 26 May to 21 July 2022. We appreciate that these changes will impact schools and to support the transition, the DfE has prepared an information pack.

What is the role of an Appropriate Body?

Schools are required to register their Early Career Teachers with an Appropriate Body to ensure they complete their inductions. The AB has two main roles:

1) Monitoring of support: ensuring that ECTs are receiving their statutory entitlements and fidelity checks, ensuring schools are supported to provide ECTs with an ECF-based induction.

2) Monitoring of assessment – make the final decision as to whether the ECT has satisfactorily met the Teachers’ Standards, based on the headteacher’s recommendation.

Where can schools find further information and support?

We recommend that schools familiarise themselves with these key documents below to help them

Early Career Framework

This is the Early Career Framework, the ‘curriculum’ that the new induction for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) must deliver on. The Teacher Standards still remain the assessment tool against which ECTs will be judged to successfully complete induction.

Induction for early career teachers (England)

This is a useful document which outlines the statutory requirements for schools and will support schools in making a decision on how they will support their ECTs: the full induction package (FIP), the core induction package (CIP) or the school-based induction.

Appropriate Bodies Guidance: Induction and the Early Career Framework

For schools choosing the core induction package or the school-based induction, there is useful information on how the Appropriate Body will be involved ‘fidelity check’ your school’s plans. There are templates included and an outline of what to expect.
